Students from St Andrews Primary School then made a presentation about joint work done with pupils at Brookfield Primary, as part of the School Linking Network. Activities included talking about prized possessions, exercising simultaneously, drama-based games and animations. This local link then led to the school linking with a school in Pakistan.

Yvonne Luce from Global Education Derby then led an interesting activity about Identity based on what we can know about people when we first meet them, and other charcateristics that become apparent after a longer association.

Next Maggie Talty-Sanghera from Global Education Derby then shared tips about how to gather evidence for Ofsted about Community Cohesion - this included:-

  • Understanding the context of the school's community (eg, in relation to ethnicity, religions and socio-economic issues)
  • Developing a planned response to needs - a clear action plan
  • Evaluating the impact of work carried out

Finally, Naira Antoun from The Council for Arab-British Understanding then led a series of fascinating activities about our understanding of the Arab world in relation to its religious , cultural and linguistic diversity, architecture, stereotypes and words in the English language with Arabic origin (eg. algebra, coffee, syrup, cotton, calendar, alcohol). All materials for teacher led activities are available on the website.

The meeting enabled educators to share ideas about bringing Community Cohesion to life in a variety of stimulating and interactive ways.

The theme of the meeting "Developing Successful School Partnerships".

  • Sorting cards to establish the most important features of a school link eg,mutual learning, clear aims, joint ownership, measurable outcomes
  • Curriuculum links to the Millenium Development Goals

The interest from new schools is really encouraging.
