Sustainable Schools ShowcaseThe list of speakers has been confirmed and the new booking leaflet and website are available for bookings. Creative Approaches to Citizenship24 participants attended 13 lectures and participatory workshops at a Creative Approaches to Citizenship course on 6th June 2007. The underlying theme of the day was to always reflect on citizenship from both the local and then the global dimensions using cross curricular themes. An introduction to citizenship, presented by Barbara Young, was followed by an induction into political literacy. Barabara Young explains, "This was very well received by everyone with many extremely positive comments on the essential nature of the opening courses and how effective they were at helping teaching colleagues to understand why they were being asked to teach citizenship and why it is so important that (a) they do it and (b) that they do it well!" The tone was set in the morning and continued throughout the day with some super workshops including an appreciation of Indian dance - movement and its meanings to the issues of global warming (a public speaking competition was also launched) and recycling. Participants were keen to fin dout more about how they could establish the global dimension in their schools in a meaningful way. Many wanted to explore further the idea of International School Links and the speakers on the day addressed many of the questions raised. Click here to download the conference programme. Teachers NetworkThe Lincolnshire Teachers Network is a group of interested teachers who come together to work on a ‘wish list’ of provision to support the global dimension in the county. Co-ordinated through the Citizenship and PHSE consultant for Lincolnshire School Improvement Service, this group have been active for 3 years. All of those involved have an active interest in promoting the global dimension, and meetings are always lively and thought provoking. To find out how to get involved contact jfletcher@cfbt.com
Artefact Boxes The Teachers Network identified availability of appropriate resources to support the global dimension as a significant gap for teachers in Lincolnshire. In order to rectify this, they compiled artefact boxes which are now available for loan.
Living, Learning and Sharing The Lincolnshire Teachers group worked with a local organisation ‘Christian Partners in Africa’ to produce a CD and DVD based on St Paul’s School in Rukungiri, Uganda. There is footage from the school, including a day in the life of Peruth one of the pupils, interviews with staff, a wonderful gallery of images, lesson plans and curriculum links. Schools in Lincolnshire will receive copies of the resource.
