Lincolnshire Centre for Social Justice Event

Bishop Grosseteste Logo

On 22 April Dr Richard Woolley organised a Social Justice seminar at Bishop Grossteste University College, Lincoln.

The event began by Rohini Corfield exploring the relationship between the Global Dimension, and Social Justice by drawing on the concept of Ubuntu.

Max Hogg, from the Global Poverty Project then gave an engaging multi-media presentation entitled '1.4 Billion Reasons' which put global poverty into context, and suggested what individuals could do to contribute to tackling social injustice.

Participants were then given discussion time to explore how they could incorporate Social Justice issues into their work.

The audience of teacher trainee students, lecturers and Local Authority advisers found the session stimulating.

Lincolnshire Sustainable Schools Showcase

On 3 March Rohini Corfield represented EMNGPS at the East Midlands Sustainable Schools Showcase, 2010, organised by CfBT and Lincolnshire County Council, and co - sponsored by EMNGPS and Government Office for the East Midlands - see website.

The aim of the event was to inspire students, teachers, Head teachers, governors and Local Authority advisers to implement the Sustainable Schools framework - see teachernet website.

The event included:-

  • talks for adults, including one about Bringing the Global Dimension to Life by EMNGPS and strategic inputs by DCSF and Ofsted
  • activities for students about Climate Change, participation, World Music, Forest Schools, Carbon Footprint
  • 120 local, regional and national exhibitors relating to all 8 doorways

Lincolnshire Sustainable Schools Showcase - 4 March 2009

The EPIC centre was the venue for a fantastic conference organised by Lincolnshire Local Authority about bringing the Sustainable Schools framework to life - www.teachernet.gov.uk/sustainableschools/
The theme Our Future is in their hands! enabled schools, community organisations and local authorities from all parts of the country to share information about all aspects of sustainability. 103 exhibitors relating to the eight doorways of the Sustainable Schoools Framework demonstrated practical help schools could access with each of the doorways:

  • Global dimension
  • Buildings and grounds
  • Food and drink
  • Purchasing and waste
  • Travel and traffic
  • Energy and water
  • Inclusion and participation
  • Local well-being

There were also:

  • A series of talks from Ofsted, DCSF, British Council and schools
  • Tours of the EPIC centre
  • Cooking Demonstrations
  • Drumming workshops

The whole event had a Waste Free Policy and was a Carbon Neutral Event. The carbon emmissions generated by transport and energy consumption at the event were offset via woodland creation projects with the Woodland Trust and via international methane capture and renewable energy projects with the Carbon Neutral Company.

Our congratulations go to Jane Fletcher, Kim Hudson and Andy Roberts - for an inspirational event.

Sustainable Schools Showcase

The list of speakers has been confirmed and the new booking leaflet and website are available for bookings.

The website gives details of the speakers and exhibitors, and is updated daily with info.

As you will see there are many national/regional speakers now so I do hope you will feel that it is worthwhile suggesting school staff, governors and parents from your region come to the event. You are more than welcome to have a stand at the event to promote your authority or your organisation.

Creative Approaches to Citizenship

24 participants attended 13 lectures and participatory workshops at a Creative Approaches to Citizenship course on 6th June 2007.

The underlying theme of the day was to always reflect on citizenship from both the local and then the global dimensions using cross curricular themes. An introduction to citizenship, presented by Barbara Young, was followed by an induction into political literacy. Barabara Young explains, "This was very well received by everyone with many extremely positive comments on the essential nature of the opening courses and how effective they were at helping teaching colleagues to understand why they were being asked to teach citizenship and why it is so important that (a) they do it and (b) that they do it well!"

The tone was set in the morning and continued throughout the day with some super workshops including an appreciation of Indian dance - movement and its meanings to the issues of global warming (a public speaking competition was also launched) and recycling.

Participants were keen to fin dout more about how they could establish the global dimension in their schools in a meaningful way. Many wanted to explore further the idea of International School Links and the speakers on the day addressed many of the questions raised.

Teachers Network

The Lincolnshire Teachers Network is a group of interested teachers who come together to work on a ‘wish list’ of provision to support the global dimension in the county. Co-ordinated through the Citizenship and PHSE consultant for Lincolnshire School Improvement Service, this group have been active for 3 years. All of those involved have an active interest in promoting the global dimension, and meetings are always lively and thought provoking. To find out how to get involved contact  jfletcher@cfbt.com

Artefact Boxes

The Teachers Network identified availability of appropriate resources to support the global dimension as a significant gap for teachers in Lincolnshire. In order to rectify this, they compiled artefact boxes which are now available for loan.
The boxes contain artefacts around the following countries and themes:
Uganda
Caribbean
Masks
Musical instruments
Mexico
Hungary
China
India
Kenya
Boxes also contain lesson plans and ideas for how to use the materials.
To find out more about how to borrow the boxes, please contact jfletcher@cfbt.com

Living, Learning and Sharing

The Lincolnshire Teachers group worked with a local organisation ‘Christian Partners in Africa’ to produce a CD and DVD based on St Paul’s School in Rukungiri, Uganda. There is footage from the school, including a day in the life of Peruth one of the pupils, interviews with staff, a wonderful gallery of images, lesson plans and curriculum links. Schools in Lincolnshire will receive copies of the resource.
