EMNGPS E-News
December 2009

Dear EMNGPS members,

Here is our latest e-news! We aim to share information about EMNGPS progress, Global Dimension events and resources in an accessible way. This communication is to highlight items that may be of interest to you, but for any further details please look at the EMNGPS website or contact Rohini Corfield (Project Manager) or Annette Jarvis (Project Assistant).

This year has been a particularly demanding year with all the DFID Reviews on top of the usual workload. We would therefore like to take this opportunity to extend an especially BIG THANK-YOU for all the work you do for and with EMNGPS, and to wish you a happy festive season and every joy in the new year. It's a real pleasure to work with you.

Best Wishes

Rohini and Annette

Season's Greetings

  • DFID Building Support for Development Consultation - EMNGPS has responded to the latest DFID Consultation about cancelling EES grants and the DAF (click here to download the draft EMNGPS response)

  • DEA Consortium - EMNGPS has pre-registered with the DEA to receive any information about a potential Consortium, but made it clear that this decision was not agreed by all EMNGPS members

  • Global Learning Charter- EMNGPS has signed the Global Learning Charter and would now like to encourage members to do the same (visit the dea website). The Charter makes the argument that the global challenges we face can't just be left to technical and policy fixes, but needs a mass campaign of education and citizen involvement, and that this is a challenge for all of society's institutions.

Signatories include many schools, development agencies such as Oxfam and Practical Action, environmental charities such as BTCV, trade union organisations such as the TUC, youth organisations such as the National Youth Agency and a range of others including the Royal Geographical Society and the Eden Project.

To sign up to it, please email Max Hogg

EMNGPS News

  • The EMNGPS Executive Committee needs your talents and expertise! 2 members of the EMNGPS Executive Committee (EC) have left due to a change in their professional roles. EMNGPS would therefore like to welcome applications for new EC members. Please note that as EMNGPS is not a legally-constituted charity in its own right, the Executive Committee is only an advisory body and EC members do not have the same financial responsibilities as Trustees. Skillshare International, as the hosting organisation for EMNGPS, is accountable to DFID. Find out more...
  • The EMNGPS Residential Conference will take place on 29 - 30 April 2010 at Scalford Hall, near Melton Mowbray. It is likely that one day will be spent on Locality Groups sharing their work and one day on monitoring, evaluation and impact assessment. More details to follow nearer the time.

  • School Leadership Project - Phil and Barbara Smith (Project Managers) have written up the discussions from the 5 Headteacher meetings. These have been used to draft a Leadership Framework which will be available in a web format. EMNGPS and Oxfam were invited to share information about this project at a National College conference held in London with 70 Headteachers.

  • David Taylor responded to the request in the last e-newsletter saying he would like to help EMNGPS with fund-raising - the Executive Committee will agree how to take this forward.
  • Dorcas Adusei has returned after maternity leave and will be working with a variety of colleagues in Northamptonshire to embed the Global Dimension across all aspects of school life.

Locality Group Updates (click here to visit the locality groups webpage)

Derbyshire Locality Group have been attracting huge interest from teachers, Heads and Local Authority partners with their themed CPD approach. At the School Linking autumn meeting 60 educators from Derby City and Derbyshire turned up and the meeting had to be re-located to a bigger venue!

Leicestershire - The Locality Group held its first meeting in the new premises of Leicester Masaya Link Group at Southfields Library with a good turn out of schools, NGO and Local Authority partners. Members from the group ran a Global Dimension conference for 120 primary PGCE students at Leicester University.

Lincolnshire - The Locality Group held an all-day meeting to familiarise themselves with video-conferencing as a tool to support peer learning. An interesting partnership is emerging between the Locality Group and Bishop Grosseteste University College, which could result in a joint Global Learning resources centre for Lincolnshire teachers and ITE students.

Rutland Locality Group have held three meetings this term with contributions from a variety of speakers from the Local Authority and partner organisations e.g. EMNGPS, Link Community Development. They also held a successful Rutland Sustainable Schools Showcase conference involving pupils and teachers. Amy Butterworth-Fernandes, who has co-ordinated all this work, will be leaving her post in December so EMNGPS would like to say a hearty THANK YOU to Amy for all her work, and to wish her well for the future.

The Northamptonshire Locality Group has been contributing to a Global Dimension strategy paper which highlights the contribution that GD work can make to the County's strategic Children and Young People's Service Plan. There is also a re-structuring taking place which means that Dorcas will join the Playing for Success teams. The group are also compiling school GD case-studies. Nicky Booth has done an excellent job in keeping the GD agenda alive at a time of upheaval, cuts and staff changes.

In Nottinghamshire the Locality Group ran two follow-up twilight sessions for 35 teachers on Education for Sustainable Development and the Global Dimension. MUNDI staff are also involved in helping to develop the secondary GARP. The next LG meeting will plan future events.

Working Group Updates:

  • The Monitoring and Evaluation Group has helped to collate the annual EMNGPS Monitoring and Evaluation Report for DFID, and the EMNGPS responses to the DFID Reviews.

  • The Funding Working Group has been encouraging DFID to keep funding EMNGPS and identifying ways of generating income through selling services and applying for project funds.
