History of EMNGPS

Throughout the second half of 2001, meetings in the East Midlands brought together people and organisations with an active interest in working with schools to embed an understanding of global perspectives within the curriculum. These initial meetings looked at how the East Midlands should respond to the Department for International Development (DFID) initiative, Enabling Effective Support (EES).

"EES supports the development of locally owned strategies to achieve more comprehensive, high quality support to teachers for the delivery of the global dimension. Each strategy will focus on how global perspective sin the curriculum can be effectively delivered and supported, particularly through new partnerships and co-operative ways of working; and also how to access resources that support work in this area. These strategies will place schools in a stronger position to engage with and respond to the challenges of globalisation, sustainable development and active citizenship.

As a result of this consultation exercise, a successful bid was submitted to DFID to support the development of a strategy for Global Perspectives in Schools. This was carried out in two phases during 2002.

Phase 1 - Strategy Development
Phase 1 of Global Perspectives in Schools, concentrated on a research and consultation process in 3 target areas (Derbyshire, Lincolnshire and Nottingham City). Pilot projects which built on existing opportunities and created new partnerships were set up to ensure that the strategy development was rooted in real practice.

Phase 2 - Implementation
Phase 2 was a roll-out process based on new partnerships which had proven successful in the pilot and consultation stages and which responded to the specific needs of the region. The aim was to engage an ever-increasing group of stakeholders and continue to develop new ways of working with them.

There were two elements in Phase 2:

Phase 2a - Initial Research and Consultation
This phase involved three target LEA areas (Derbyshire, Lincolnshire and Nottingham City). In each of these areas activity included research with schools to develop a detailed picture of their involvement in, and attitudes to, the international dimension. In parallel, a limited process of consultation to identify a range of new stakeholders who could become closely involved in the development and implementation of the strategy was conducted.

To find out more about the findings from these pilot projects see Helen Lawson's report.

Phase 2b - Publicity & Wider Consultation
Phase 2b built on the focused and detailed consultation and research of phase 2a to move on to a wider process of consultation and publicity across the region. This included:

  • Capacity building analysis & delivery
  • Building relationships with potential funders
  • Stakeholder meeting

The finalised strategy document was successfully submitted to DFID in November 2002 and implementation of the EMNGPS strategy started on 1st April 2003.
